Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, J.L. Slipak had spent her early years listening to the vivid stores and the wild imaginations of her father - Lorne Spence, a local steel worker. She would also sit for hours listening to stories her grandfather (Owen Spence) would tell, then hurry home and write them down. She found her love for the written word from the encouragement of her teachers throughout her school years, writing for plays, school newspapers, local city newspapers and classmates.
J.L. spent her summers writing and creating stories for all who would sit and listen to them. Ever since her earliest days, she loved story telling and was always found with her nose in a book.
She could not escape the allure of storytelling and quickly began studying to become a novelist. She began by reading every chance she had. Then she took courses at a local college. From classical literature to contemporary novels, J.L.'s love of storytelling was uncontrollable. Every chance she got, she wrote her stories down, often awakening in the middle of the night from a dream just to write its details down before she forgot them. Over a span of 20 years, J.L. has accumulated a closet full of novels, short stories, children's stories, etc.
Even when she furthered her studies by taking programs in the arts and design, humanities, and literature, J.L. continued to write in her spare time. Although she worked in the design and legal profession and studied dance, she never gave up her hope of one day becoming a novelist. Click on pictures below to buy my book(s)....
She met and married a single father from Port Colborne, Ontario and continued to write in her spare time while raising a houseful of kids and continuing to work. She started her own craft business with her father.
The birth of her youngest, a special needs daughter named Katie, brought reality to a standstill for J.L. J.L.'s life soon changed. Her daughter's medical complications forced J.L. to begin writing for another purpose. Soon J.L. was advocating for the rights of her daughter, using her skills as a writer to fight for funding and aid to better her education and developmental skills.
At this stage in J.L.'s life, priorities dictated her life and her daughter's needs came before her own. She had to give up her job working in the field of design and law, and end the business she had started with her father... and in doing so, monies became tight.
So J.L. did the only thing she could and began yet another business based on another love of hers, the performing arts. She opened a small studio in her home built by her husband, so that she could be around for Katie at all times and make a living to help pay the bills of the household.
After two expansions that took her business out of her house, and over thirteen years of success, this business now thrives with many accreditations of its own. Her love of imaginary worlds, people and characters where born from her own original story ballets written by her, and performed by her beloved students.
"Escapism is not a bad thing if found in the written word."
Always resourceful and never ready to give up her dream of writing, she still continues her studies on line. "You can never know everything there is about something... never, ever should you say you know it all--someone else will make you look silly by knowing more."
Through her daughter, Katie, J.L. began to realize the existence of another world not often touched by the written word, and soon J.L. found the need to write for another purpose, chomping at her resolve again... She began her "The Adventures of Iggy Squiggles", a children's series about a little girl who knows no boundaries to her imagination and life as a child being raised by her grandparents on their orchard farm. With her friends and many imaginary characters she creates, Iggy sets off daily on a new adventure, filled with a problem to solve or a discovery new. Through the eyes of a child, discover a world of make believe filled with wonder and discovery. Illustrated by J.L., this series is sure to please. Scheduled for release in 2009.
