The Light Of Dark, is a thriller with a supernatural twist.

Amanda Stevens is "different". Everyone who knows her, accepts this-almost to an over-protective proportion. Why?

Twenty-three children are missing and Amanda Stevens is terrified she knows why. But FBI Agent Scott Marshall has no use for ‘psychics.’ With each fragmented vision, Amanda begins to remember secrets from her past that her mind has hidden away from her. Not knowing that another searches for her with the sole purpose of correcting a mistake made 20 years ago, Amanda seeks out what she thought was one killer. What she finds is evil, driven by vengeance. While Scott pieces together clues, Amanda allows the forces that control her visions to push her closer to the serial killer. The hunter becomes the hunted when past and present collide. Amanda suddenly disappears and Scott must find her before it's too late. As he desperately follows clues to find Amanda and the children, neither Scott nor the killer know that when Amanda returned from death as a child, she returned… different.

PRESS RELEASE ONE

J.L Slipak Releases Her First Novel, “Light of Dark”.

Local Author Publishes Thriller With A Supernatural Twist

Port Colborne, Ontario – January 14, 2008

Canadian author, J.L. Slipak, has astounded the literary world by dipping into the realm of the supernatural with her first novel, published January 3, 2008, putting an unexpected twist to the word thriller.

J.L. Slipak seized the opportunity to use free time in between caring for her special needs child, running her businesses and maintaining family time to write her 499-page thriller novel “Light of Dark” that is now available on Lulu.com for purchasing.  You can visit this author on her website: www.awritersconnection.com, or through her business site: www.finessedancestudioinc.com for more details.

J.L. comments: “We live in a world full of stories about serial killers where the reader is seeing the world through the killer’s twisted mind; I felt it was time to see the crimes through the eyes of a victim. And in this case, a victim with the capability of doing something about what was happening.

J.L. has written short stories since a teen and has had articles published in local newspapers advocating for special needs children. Writing a novel was the next challenge for her. The book took her a year to write.

J.L. says: “Only a few years ago I would have struggled to find both the time and a patient publisher to enable me to create this book. Most commercial fiction authors face a write, write, write world!  Publishing is not an easy process and should be left to the professionals, but this was something I needed to do on a personal level.  Writing is my outlet, my escape. Thanks to my family and the ability to distribute and sell my book on Lulu, I am now proud to be a published author.”  When asked about the genre she’s chosen to write in, J.L. jokes: “It must have something to do with me constantly striving for balance in my life that drives me to write about such unbalanced characters!”

And when asked about what inspired her upcoming children’s series and fantasy series? “Well that’s easy!  My great childhood and my daughter Katie are my inspirations for the upcoming Iggy Squiggle series; my father’s love for the science fiction and fantasy genres rubbed off on me when I was a child. I remember listening to his stories about magical beings until I was hooked on the world of make believe that fantasy and science fiction work revolves around.  Thankfully, being creative was encouraged in my family. This was perfect since my imagination as a child was over the top!”  Not a bad thing for a writer either!

She goes on to say, “In fact, all my life, my wild imagination has been my driving force for projects and business ventures, and so far, it hasn’t let me down.” When asked if J.L. sees her book selling, she says: “You know, in my mind whether my book sells or not, I’m a success because I’ve achieved a life-long goal to have a book in print with my name on it that people are reading and liking. It’s a surreal feeling seeing something you’ve wanted so bad actually realized. And yes, it will sell itself. It’s a great story. Whether I get rich on it or not isn’t the point. I’m an author and will continue to be one.”

When asked what advice J.L. would give to people who want to write, she offers: “I think as parents in society, we’re forgetting to feed the creative part of our children’s lives. With the way everything is speeding past, we tend to think only of the academics and push our children to excel with the essentials they need for high school, university and then careers. Those essentials of course, are very important but what about the substance of character that is derived from creativity? What we are forgetting is that some of the greatest inventions of our time was born through the creative imaginations of inventors and dreamers. They believed or dared enough to imagine amazing possibilities that sometimes fell outside the realm of norm, where success was but a venture past the lines and boundaries set by school academics and social expectations. One cannot believe in miracles, if one doesn’t dare to imagine or dream of one first. If that side of us isn’t nurtured too, then we will simply succeed with existing in life, instead of enjoying it and imagining greater possibilities for it. Why is it so terrible to dream… some of my best stories were spurned on by a dream…”

Her book is set in Houston, Texas. While Scott pieces together clues, Amanda allows the forces that control her visions to push her closer to the serial killer. The hunter becomes the hunted when past and present collide. Amanda suddenly disappears and Scott must find her before it’s too late. As he desperately follows clues to find Amanda and the children, neither Scott nor the killer know that when Amanda returned from death as a child, she returned… different.

PRESS RELEASE TWO

Light of Dark sees ray of hope for Port Colborne author

Posted By KAESHA FORAND/Tribune Staff

PORT COLBORNE - Thursday, January 22, 2009

What began as a story idea 20 years ago, recently came to fruition in the form of a 500-page book for Janet Slipak.

Light of Dark, a supernatural thriller, is her first novel, published under her pen name J.L. Slipak in January 2008.

It is now starting to pick up momentum. Sales are increasing and the book is close to being available through book stores.

“We live in a world full of stories about serial killers where the reader is seeing the world through the killer’s twisted mind. I felt it was time to see the crimes through the eyes of a victim. And in this case, a victim with the capability to do something about what was happening,” Slipak said.

Between caring for her special needs daughter Katie and running her dance studio, Slipak spent one year writing the novel. Although writing was a hobby from a young age, the novel was a challenge she chose to embark upon.

“I would liked to have done it every day to keep the storyline in my head, but because of life, I didn’t have that luxury. Writing is (done) more or less when everybody has gone to bed.”

Light of Dark is set in Houston, Texas, where 23 children are missing – and Amanda Sevens is terrified she knows why. But FBI Agent Scott Marshall has no use for psychics. With each fragmented vision, Sevens begins to remember secrets from her past that her mind has hidden away from her.

Not knowing that another person searches for her with the sole purpose of correcting a mistake made 20 years ago, Sevens seeks out who she thought was one killer.

While Marshall pieces together clues, Sevens allows forces that control her visions to push her closer to the serial killer. The hunter becomes the hunted when past and present collide. Sevens suddenly disappears and Scott must find her before it’s too late.

As he desperately follows clues to find Sevens and the children, neither Marshall nor the killer know that when she returned from death as a child, she returned different.

Slipak’s first book is the tip of the iceberg.

Her current project focuses on a children’s series called the Iggy Squiggle series of short stories, with life lessons in each book. She hopes they will be available in 2010 through Scholastic Canada.

“My father’s love for the science-fiction and fantasy genres rubbed off on me when I was a child listening to his stories about magical beings. Thankfully, being creative was encouraged in my family. This was perfect since my imagination as a child was over the top,” she said, noting her daughter Katie was also an inspiration for the series.

A book signing for Light of Dark will take place Saturday, Jan. 31, at Finesse Dance Studio, 885 Elm St., from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. It’s a chance to meet the author for a question and answer period about writing and to purchase a signed copy of the book.

More information is at www.awritersconnection.com.

Light of Dark is being filed with Library and Archives Canada and upon completion will be available to order through book stores with the 13-digit ISBN number found on the barcode.

Slipak also hopes after the book is filed that it will be available on Amazon websites and the Barnes & Noble website, the Internet’s largest bookstore.

Slipak is also working on the A Moment in Time series which currently comprises 12 manuscripts, each between 200 and 300 pages long.

PRESS RELEASE THREE

Janet Slipak, who goes by the pen name J.L. Slipak, sits in her living room where she pens most of her work and holds up a copy of her latest book, "Light of Dark".

Local author shows off her knack for sci-fi writing
By Ashley Guay, Staff

Jan 30, 2009
Janet Slipak has been writing since the age of 20 but life got in the way when it came to actually getting her stories out there.

She went to school, got married, started her own dance studio in Port Colborne and took care of her special needs daughter, Katie. There was room to write, but mainly when everyone else was sleeping.

It was during one night when she woke up from a dream, shook awake her husband and began to tell him what had happened that she got the idea for her first published book, Light of Dark.

"I woke up and said listen to this," said Slipak. "And he said' wow, what did you eat? Where did you come up with that?"

She said in the dream she was the main character from her book and got the idea for the serial killer family that is also in her book.

"What really inspired me was the story line," said Slipak. "It's a great story."

Slipak spent a year writing Light of Dark, which was actually published in early 2008, and that she classifies as a thriller with a supernatural twist. She said she spent a lot of time researching for the novel as well by reading up on criminal profiling and Houston, Texas where the novel is set.

This wasn't Slipak's first try at writing either. Before she penned Light of Dark, she had writtren the first book in a series of 12, entitled A Moment in Time. Slipak said the first person to read the manuscripts was her late father who Slipak said would be honest with her about the books.

"He said, 'it needs work'," said Slipak. "But you have something here."

A Moment in Time is a project in the works for Slipak who is also currently looking for an illustrator for her children's series Iggy Squiggles, which Slipak said is based on her childhood and her daughter's.

"Each story is a life lesson," said Slipak. "And I want to make sure everything comes together so those lessons aren't lost on the reader."

Her other side, however, her supernatural and adult side, will continue writing fiction.

There will be a sequel to Light of Dark which is the story about 23 children who go missing and psychic Amanda Stevens thinks she knows why. However, FBI agent Scott Marshall has no use for psychics. As Amanda received visions she begins to remember secrets from her past and doesn't know that another searches for her with the sole purpose of correcting a mistake made 20 years ago. While Scott pieces together clues, Amanda allows the forces that control her visions to push her closer to the serial killer. The hunter becomes the hunted when past and present collide. Amanda suddenly disappears and Scott must find her before it's too late.

Slipak, who self-published her book, said that quantity and how many books she sells is not what she's after. Rather, it's quality.

"You learn from what you do," said Slipak.

Slipak will be holding a book signing tomorrow at her business Finesse Dance Studio at 885 Elm St. in Port Colborne. The book signing will be held between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. and will also include a small reading and a question and answer period.

Light of Dark can be purchased through Slipak's website www.awritersconnection.com or through the website www.lulu.com
